Worlds biggest conference on communication science

The International Communication Association host its 56th Annual Conference in Dresden these days. Too bad, I can’t be there, alone the idea of being in the same room with so many great theorists like Habermas and Castells would have been a great honour. The program is huge, let alone the overview is 21 pages.

I searched it for the keyword ‘identity’ and not surprisingly most of the contributions I found deal with ethnicity, culture and society. Constructing identities appear, twice linked with organization, once even within networks, a subject I have been working on before.

Identity and the internet is discussed on the matter of identification, but:
Constructing organizational identities with weblogs – that’s new, I am proud. Hope, I can do something really innovative here.

Kiki Pics and Lehmann Video

Kiki Beachbar BerlinYes, Kiki Blofeld definetely is a great place to watch football. ..if you come in time and get a premium seat up on the palettes. Close to the river, nice people, great atmosphere. So urban, it almost hurts.

Also, I found a great video: Lehmann and Nince Inch Nails. Positive aggressions. No chance for Riquelme, Beckham and Drogba. Still, I am literally fearing a quarterfinal Germany vs Argentina.

Crazy – Dangermouse did it again

This guy is certainly an internet star. Dangermouse who just boarded the charts with Gnarls Barkley, released another album. Everyone can download for free on [adult swim]. Quite smoky and fluffy hiphop, though not as good as his previous releases. Thanks anyway for the nice and free music!

My favourite is the Madlib Remix

World cup stuff – I’m a Berlinizer!

I am exited. Today finally is the world cup kick off, world cup mania in Germany, a unique experience. Especially in Berlin, we expect many, many people, hopefully a lot of sun and we want to be hospital and helpful and just have a good time all together.

“Berlinizers” is a campaign to make Berlin citizens visisible that are willing to help guests get along in our city. Make a short test on Berlinizer.com and they’ll give you a pin to display you are a Berlinizer. I just got one in Spanish! And I liked the Berlinizer song by Culcha Candela so much, it’s now even my ringtone.

Barcelona controls beach bars

Chiringuito BarcelonaFoto: Mario BarcelonaAbout exactly three years ago, I made a beach party in Barcelona as a closing event for Sonar festival. It was great, we had cool Cologne DJs spinning (M.I.A., Sascha Mikloweit, Marc Lansley from Substatic..), but unfortunately we had to stop at 01:00h because of the noise or the license. Of course, we could not build our own infrastructure on the beach, without permission it was just too dangerous, our lawyer adviced us. So we relied on one of the popular “chiringuitos”, bars at the city’s beaches, that exist all over the coast, big and small, simple and pompous, oldfashioned and modern-stylish.

Shir Khan Videointerview

The ‘signal’ festival was great and I had the big honour to play in between DJ Hype and Jim Dunloop (awesome: turntablelism, funky beats and piano improvisation), Beatbox Elliot (so tight, you think it’s a drum machine) and Toktok (friendly gabba with fun factor). The people stayed, which I took as a compliment.. Really an inspiring evening with lots of different music and arts and open-minded people!

And today, finallly, I edited the Shir Khan interview I did weeks ago. On the 8th of may, his band Tolcha released their first album, “Gestalt”. I have been listening to it ever since and it really suits for a big city feeling with its massive sounds and streetwise lyrics. The soul glows deep in the centre of black stone.. Continue reading

We got a ‘Signal’ coming

Party Arty GallerySignal’ is a four days festival for music, art, inspiration. It happens in Festsaal Kreuzberg and starts today! Lots of good vibes and energy culminate in this idea that is only two weeks old.

I got infected as well and will play on tuesday. Yes, it’s the long awaited (by myself) return of Stylewalker to the turntables with some nice summer music. Since summer is a little lazy this year.
So please, come to see me: Stylewalker at ‘Signal’ in Party-Arty Gallery Skalitzer Straße 130!
Starts at eight, so it’s just perfect to come around just to have a look and a drink and some vibes.

Turntablelism

DJ Kid FreshKid FreshWhen I was younger, I used to spend hours with the turntables, trying to juggle, to scratch, do routines, be a true turntablelist. The biggest success: winning a pair of headphones at a local competition. Man, I was proud!

But basically, that was just good practice for playing in parties and in clubs later, I got very fast with the records and it was always cool to introduce some tunes with a little *scratch*.

In the end, I never got a real turntablelist but I still got love for the game. So I was delighted when I met Kid Fresh, playing at Yaneq‘s record release party. Like me, he is from Göttingen, we used to hang out back then (in the 90ies) and I admired his techniques a lot.
